According to Medical News Today there is a difference between weight resistance training and aerobic exercises. The difference is significant in that weight resistance training produces a different pattern of blood vessel responses as reported in the November issue of The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, official research journal of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. “Resistance exercise may offer greater benefits from the increases in blood flow to active muscles and could be implemented as companion to an aerobic training regimen,” according to the new study, led by Scott R. Collier, Ph.D., of Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C.
The research shows that weight resistance training provides a better blood flow to the limbs than aerobic exercise. Additionally, weight resistance training lowers blood pressure. While arterial stiffness is caused by both weight resistance and aerobic exercise, it is important that any cardiovascular training program include the right mix of aerobic and weight resistance exercises.
Weight Lifting is not for everyone. Even though there are many benefits, it is important to check with your physician before starting any exercise program (strength training, aerobic or other type). According to WebMD, here are some things to consider before starting strength training:
Who Should Not Lift Weights
Some heart patients should not lift weights. Weight training is not recommended if you have:
- Unstable coronary heart disease such as those with angina
- Congestive heart failure
- Severe pulmonary hypertension
- Severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis
- Acute infection of the heart or tissues surrounding the heart
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure (more than 180/110 mmHg)
- Aortic dissection
- Marfan syndrome
